The Mundane Gundam Cafe Experience

I’ve read about Gundam Cafe somewhere on the internet, but I never planned on going there. Not a big Gundam Fan, and I doubt James has ever watched any episode of Gundam. Somehow, we stumbled upon it as we were walking back to Akihabara Station. We ended up betting on it for dessert on the night despite a line. Here is me queueing :)

Me Lining Up at Gundam Cafe

Two Ladies Chatting in Gundam Cafe

The line was not too long, but it was a long wait. It didn’t move a bit for 10 minutes, and I had an annoying view. To my left, two middle aged ladies were chatting casually over their finished meal in facing the queue. OK. They do have their right to enjoy the scene until the lady on the right had finished her drink, but she hadn’t been touching it and it seems that they’ve been doing this even before I had arrived. We finally got in after 20 plus minutes of wait, and guess whose seats we took. Yes. We sat right where the two ladies had been. I can’t help but wonder what topic was so interesting that they had to sit over thirty minutes, I bet, after their meal was done while people are waiting in front of their lines.

Yankee-kun to Megane-chan: Why I Switched from Drama to Manga

Yankee-kun to Megane-chan was originally created as a manga and recently adapted to a drama. I just discovered it the other way around. I needed a break from reading too many manga too much the other day. I browsed, and chose to watch Yankee-kun to Megane-chan drama because of the interesting title.

Synopsis from drama wiki:

Shinagawa Daichi used to be a good student who has now become a delinquent, while class president Adachi Hana was a delinquent who is now trying to move on. Her secret is discovered by Shinagawa, but she involves herself trying to correct his ways.

I have a good first impression of the Yankee-kun to Megane-chan (yannmega) drama, it was quite hillarious. While Narimiya Hiroki’s acting is a bit to the cheesy side, but Shinagawa Daichi’s character that he was playing is entertaining. The real star of the drama, in my opinion is Naka Riisa. She plays her role as Adachi Hana, a nagging class representative very well.

Seinen Wednesday 3: Kaze no Yojimbo

Let’s take a break from Manga and divert to anime this week.

Kaze no Yojimbo is one of the first Seinen anime series I have ever watched. Thinking back, it might be one of the titles which converted me into a fan of the seinen genre.

By Studio Pierrot
Genre: Action, Adventure, Mystery Seinen
Aired: 2001

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kaze no Yojimbo (trans. Bodyguard of the Wind) is a 2001/2002 Japanese animated television series based on Akira Kurosawa’s chanbara film Yojimbo.

The series follows George Kodama into the small town of Kimujuku. The wanderer quickly realizes he is an unwelcomed visitor and becomes caught up in a violent conflict between rival crime syndicates.

Hollywood’s Manga & Anime Adaptations

It is widely known that Hollywood had taken interest in turning anime into western movies. So far they are doing a pretty bad job at it. Dragon Ball and Speed Racer are far from good. They were mediocre. Many fans were surely disappointed.

Where did they go wrong, I wonder?

There are many things that makes an illustrated story a manga; not a manhwa or comic. The same thing goes with anime, which is totally different than its western counterpart. The essence of anime and manga goes way beyond art style and graphical technology; themes, plots, characters and storytelling style. Culture and mindset clearly plays a big role shaping them.
