Josei Friday 3: Pet Shop of Horrors

By Akino Matsuri
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Gender Bender, Horror, Josei, Mystery, Psychological, Supernatural
Scanlation status: Completed
Read Online: Homeunix Manga

From TokyoPop:

A smoke-filled alley in Chinatown harbors Count D’s Pet Shop. The pets sold here aren’t your everyday variety and the Count prides himself on selling Love and Dreams in the form of magical creatures that come with an exclusive contract. But buyers beware. If the contract is broken the Count cannot be held accountable for whatever may happen. A fascinating and macabre look into the very soul of human nature.

After skipping last week’s Josey Friday and this week’s Seinen Wednesday, I thought about a good manga to make up for my laziness. After a short list and eliminations, I had chosen this title, Pet Shop of Horrors. I remember being enchanted with D’s allure.

Josei Friday Wk.2 – Nodame Cantabile Opera Hen

Mukyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!

Please, excuse the excitement.

Oh, wait. Rather, let’s raised our arms up high and cheer!

Welcome back to Japan, Nodame.
Yes! She’s back. The story picks up where Nodame Cantabile had left off. Shinichi returns to Tokyo to conduct the his first opera ever with the Rising Star Orchestra. Nodame tagged along and will be performing her first solo concert in Japan. They are reunited with old friends. It was good to see them again. They made some new ones too.

No worries. It’s not one of those boring sequel created for the sake of creating closure and satisfying fans’ curiosity. It is witty, entertaining, funny and filled with silly characters, just like its predecessor. It is really too bad that it is only 1 volume long. Regardless, I am grateful.

Josei Friday: Ooku

By Yoshinaga Fumi
Genre: Drama, Hisorical, Mature, Josei
Scanlation status: On Going
Read Online: Manga Fox

From Manga Fox:

In an alternative timeline of feudal Japan, a strange disease that only affects men has caused a massive reduction of male population, thus women have to pick up men’s jobs, changing the social structure. Now, after 80 years of the initial outbreak and current man:woman ratio of 1:4, Japan has become completely matriarchal, with women holding important political positions and men being their consort. Only the most powerful woman — head of Tokugawa shogunate — can keep a harem of handsome yet unproductive men, known as “Ooku.”

Never judge a book by its cover. ‘Tis very true.

I dismissed this title when I first saw its cover on Manga Fox. At first glance, I immediately thought that it will be a historical manga. Not too appetizing for that time being. That is until my sister mentioned it to me last night. She said it’s a very good manga and had received many awards.
